Was that as bad as it seemed to me?
Mr. Trump in full attack mode, using hyperbolic nonsense in alternating between his nonstop invention of his greatest presidency and Mr. Biden's worst, facts be damned.
And Mr. Biden, tongue tied and on the defensive, mixing up numbers, unable to complete thoughts, falling into the game of personal invectives and challenging Mr. Trump to a golf game as long as they both had to carry their own bags.
It was even more of a train wreck than I had imagined but it definitely put talk of Joe Biden being ready for a rocking chair not the hot seat in the Oval Office back into play. Mr. Trump, wholly unapologetic for his role in the January 6th attack on the Capitol (Nancy Pelosi admitted it was totally her fault) or for any other grievance he may ever have been accused of his entire life, suggesting Mr. Biden may be charged with crimes once he is out of office. And Mr. Biden making only the most glancing blows against a man whose entire life has been an unmitigated attack on decency and morality and whose presidency was filled with undoubtedly the worst moments of our democracy in the history of this nation.
We knew substance would be impossible to find in these 90 minutes. But we now have more to fear than just fear itself in the coming days as talk of Joe being put out to pasture dominates and a man, just convicted of 34 counts of being a philandering jerk who hid his misdeeds behind a bundle of bucks intended to silence a porn star and sway an election, and who still faces trials and tribulations for far more serious wrongs, somehow emerges as the winner in a night that showcased America at its worst.
Oy.
Oy and vay. What is wrong with the Democrats? Garland waited too long. Ginsburg stayed too long. Biden is not going to last that long.
Trump is a goddam liar. Mis-statement and falsity after fib. Biden is much better asleep than Trump when he’s awake.
But it’s time for Biden and Harris to stand up and tell the truth as they’ve always done. That they did America a favor by getting rid of Trump in 2020 and got a lot of good stuff done. But now it’s time to allow for the ascent of youth.
I feel betrayed by my Democratic party. Their incompetence of running a campaign is staggering. I cringed the whole debate. I want to fire their debate prep team. Simple things: President Biden looking down instead of into the camera, not tilting his head upward (FDR's trick) , not smiling enough, keeping his with mouth open when not speaking made him look old. More specifically, deploying a strategy of having Vice President Harris failing take the credit for the administration's accomplishments throughout the year on so many things. Bruce's comment about the "ascent of youth" is so so right. There is not enough time for it to be anybody else but Harris. My concern is that the Democratic party has this unwritten 'it's my turn' placeholder ethos, leaving the decision of who gets to run to party elders, (no pun intended.) Unfortunately, that is what prevents the ascent of youth. I'm so mad.--RE
