("My Farewell Column")
The voices of opposition are growing silent, stifled. The moment seeming too big, even for the biggest of our publications.
First, Paul Krugman left. On his way out the door he spoke, with obvious bitterness, of the way the New York Times had attempted to soften his arguments, weaken his tone, reduce his capacity to articulate fully his pressing concerns.
And now Charles Blow. While unstated in this column, one can but wonder, in these bewildering days of Donald Trump , if an opinion writer focused on proclaiming the glaring prejudices and shining a bright light on the hatreds that fuel the conservative fire, can remain a voice crying out. "Wokeness" now far too often a term of derision and far too easily instructed to tone it down.
Of all that is being lost in the darkness that is Donald Trump, maybe this should scare us the most. When it feels like the New York Times no longer has our back, we are indeed in grave danger.
Without a doubt, this is our most serious challenge: why are so many newspapers backing down, and what 'trump' card is the NYT afraid of? --RE
Terrifying time, indeed.
