The Myth of Slaying The Dragon
("The Man Who Neutered Trump")
Gun loving, immigrant bashing, voter suppressing. It sounded about perfect to Donald Trump in 2018 when he endorsed Brian Kemp just ahead of his tight Republican primary for Governor of Georgia. "A vote for him", the President said, "is a vote for me." And Mr. Kemp accepted the support like a man wandering in the desert who had just come upon a watering hole.
It was a close contest and political expediency that made Mr. Kemp hunger for the love of Mr. Trump. Two years later that need was no longer there. He was now a sitting Governor responding to a demand by a defeated politician for him to take impossibly unsupportable steps to overturn the President's November loss. Mr. Kemp, much like Vice President Pence, was no mythical hero for doing what the law required of him. He merely determined the calculations regarding unquestioned fealty to Mr. Trump had now been radically altered.
Mr. Kemp is still a gun loving, immigrant bashing, voter suppressing Republican. The only difference is he no longer needs Donald Trump to get where he wants to go.
