They gathered, without invitation, before me. First one, then two, at times five. Of various ages, from 3 to 6. Our own little flash mob.
We were at a playground. My granddaughter and I passing a few minutes with our passion of the moment, math problems. An unusual venue for this pursuit, for certain.
She was seated a few feet above me, on some climbing piece, wide enough to hold three or so little ones across. Other children moving by us, our conversation seeming of no importance to them.
Then one little boy, taking note of and interest in our undertaking, asked if he could join us. And a two way conversation suddenly became a three way discussion.
Next, a young girl became part of the group. We now had a pre-schooler, a kindergartner and a first grader participating. I knew I had to gear the difficulty of the question to the age of each listener. Each given a turn, according to their ability. Each taking evident pride in their accomplishment, whatever its form. None with a fear of falling from this height.
Next my three year old grandson appeared and the climbing area was at once overflowing. Then another one in kindergarten. And finally, the younger sibling of one of this now burgeoning assemblage.
From math we moved, for a short while, to spelling. And then a recitation of colors. Meanwhile, to my eye at least, there were no hovering parents.
I think this went on for nearly an hour. Sometimes one or two would disappear for a moment, then return, eager to show off their particular skill.
Finally, we dispersed. Some parents approaching to offer me thanks. One of the kids hugging my leg. Later, I was told someone said I had missed my calling. I fear they were correct.
It was great fun for me. Smiles, laughs and more than a few interesting responses to the questions I posed.
I am never happier than on occasions like this. Surrounded by those not yet understanding all the uncertainties that lie ahead. Enjoying the moment for its own sake. And still able to find humor in one old man and the few tricks he has up his sleeve.
You are one lucky man.
Simply beautiful.
