Mr. Pence spent 4 years in the role of ring kisser. Chosen for his love of "mother" and God, playing the dutiful Vice President.

He knew we knew he knew he was being used. With the perpetual look of someone who had just eaten something causing gastric distress, his face a stone mask hiding his contempt for the thrice married, foul mouthed, unrepentant leader who exuded an immorality that must have made Mr. Pence as uncomfortable as he appeared.

He didn't put on Superman's cape on January 6, 2021. He merely found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time and, as a person of some intellectual capacity, understood that he had no option but to stand up, not stand down and stand by, to the 800 pound elephant barking orders. The hands of Mr. Pence were tied that day by the Constitution and the realization of the pure lunacy if he followed the demands of Mr. Trump.

Mike Pence is no hero for doing what our democracy mandated of him. And to make a silk purse out of Mr. Pence's sow's ear is to forgive and forget virtually everything Mike Pence did and stood for his entire political career.

He deserves our thanks for his actions on January 6th. But given the alternatives, we still come to bury Mike Pence, not to praise him.
