David Brooks is right. Nikki Haley is the adult in the room.
While I disagree with virtually every policy position of anyone in the Republican Party, including Ms. Haley, she tried her best to insert a whiff of reality into the theatrics of what transpired on the debate stage Wednesday night.
Her "what we get wrong" lectures on foreign policy, the economy and abortion was refreshing, and most surprising to hear.
But for a Republican universe, particularly a primary universe, that has long come to sit at a table expecting to be fed red meat from Donald Trump, the bluster of Vivek Ramaswamy, playing the part of Mr. Trump, was much more pleasing to their taste buds than the eat your vegetables words of Ms. Haley.
So, while Mr. Brooks might suggest the party swivel their chair in the direction of Ms. Haley, they are laser locked in their seats this morning staring at the mug shot of their beloved former President and the scowl that launched a million donations.
And not even a scrap from the table for Nikki Haley.
If Haley is the adult in the room, we are doomed.
While I disagree with many GOP policies I think we need a reset. Too much progressive liberalism leads to socialism, anti Semitism that masquerades as anti Israeli-ism and a rebuke of hard working Americans. Taxes and the cost of living are too high. Regulations abound. Street crime has seen a resurgence with no end in sight. Weed is legal and our kids are at risk. Haley may be a game changer for America. And if somehow someway we can all agree on a 15 week abortion cut off we may see our way clear.
