One Year from Today

One year from today this nation may awaken to the worst mistake in its history. Again.

The latest polls show that a man who hasn't met a lie he can't embrace, hasn't read the Constitution and doesn't care what it says, who has taken democracy within an inch of its life is considered the best answer to what ails us.

It was unfathomable in 2016. There is not a word in our language to describe adequately  what it would mean in 2024.

For those of us who watched each day of his presidency with bewilderment and loathing, we search for clues in these numbers. Something to hold onto, to make us believe that sanity has not left the building.

Can we possibly be our best when our actions are directed by our hatreds and prejudices? When we see evil around every corner?

A year in the political arena is a lifetime. Events not in one's control can cause a tectonic shift in the ground beneath a politician's feet. But Mr. Trump has thrown so much garbage at us for years and it is evident that neither rain, sleet, four pending criminal indictments, a jury finding he committed sexual assault, a judge determining he engineered massive fraud on creditors in his business dealings, a lifetime of unrelenting and unrepentant egregious behavior, not even a presidency waving a middle finger at morality, compassion and human decency has diminished his chances of reclaiming the throne.

We are left holding our collective breath and hoping that one year from today we do not open our eyes to find a Hell of our own making staring us in the face. Again.
