Neither can I.
How can this be?
Twas' the night before Thanksgiving and what?
We speak each year of the do's and don't's, of what brings us together and what separates us when we get there. Of how much we miss this day and of why some prefer to miss it.
We each have a story to tell and yet no one, it seems, has adequately told our story. Why is this such an elusive holiday to capture?
The first Thanksgiving, if memory serves me, celebrated its 500th anniversary last year. That is a very long time to wait for the poet laureate or the Nobel prize winner in literature to catch up to it. I'll even settle for something slightly less.
I mean how could it be that nobody, anywhere awakened on the fourth Thursday of November sometime in the last half millennium and expressed ideas worthy of challenging Santa Claus for supremacy on the pop charts?
I know we don't dream of a white Thanksgiving. I understand there are no presents to open under the Thanksgiving dinner table. But couldn't we find a worthy parable somewhere in all those calories?
We are a nation that passes on our every contemplation like it or not. Just give us one tasty morsel for this day. I am starving for it. Enough to fill my head, not my stomach. But please pass the stuffing while I wait.
Happy Thanksgiving to your whole clan!--RE
