How say you to Count One of the Indictment? After that question was repeated as to each of the thirty four charges, a former President of the United States was now a convicted felon.
I was in my car listening to the radio when the verdict was returned. It was stunning, even as we knew that Donald Trump had his fingerprints all over the criminal enterprise to quiet Stormy Daniels and make sure that this follow up to the Access Hollywood disaster did not drag him under in the waning days of the 2016 presidential campaign. I heard myself give an audible response to what was reported. It felt like "a where were you when" moment, like the Kennedy assassination, the moon landing. Monumental, unforgettable, incredible.
I am a glass half empty guy when it comes to Mr. Trump. Always feeling the guillotine will never come down on his political career, that the damage he has done each and every day will never catch up to him. I still believe that what transpired today will not bring an inevitable conclusion to his saga. That he is a cat with far more than nine lives.
Notwithstanding this, today was a good day, a very good day. For me and for this nation. Important as a statement that we can stand up to anyone in this country, no matter their station. That we are better than the worst that Donald Trump would offer us. That even he has a day of reckoning. That our democracy has not yet been destroyed, even as it has been wounded by the 45th President of the United States.
Tomorrow, and in the days to come, we will have to do hand to hand combat with Mr. Trump. Now not only a former President, but with another title. Thank you, 34 times, to 12 men and women who made history today. You did good.
34 counts of guilty does not dissipate the immense fear I have. The stupidity of his supporters still threatens our democracy. Our country is in for a very rough time. --RE
PS. Felons, in most states, now can vote after they are released from prison. Why can’t they vote while in prison?
