Fill 'er up
("Will Gas Prices Doom Democracy?")
If a single remark by James Comey made 11 days before the 2016 election could elevate Donald Trump to the Oval Office, then whether your gallon of gas costs a nickel more or less on the first Tuesday in November than the last one in October could certainly now determine the fate of our democracy.
We are creatures of the moment, the overturning of Roe v Wade too distant in time to still burn in the soul. And issues like the decimation of our Constitutional protections no match for today's rising price of mortgages.
Democrats have forever focused on having a discussion with your head, on directing your attention to large principles, while Republicans speak directly to your gut. What they are spewing forth doesn't have to make sense, or be in even remote contact with the truth, it just has to bring forth a visceral response in the intended region of the body.
So while the fate of the free world may rest on the cost of your last fill up before casting your ballot, Mr. Krugman should not find this state of affairs ludicrous but instructive.
Democrats should remember and learn, instead of repeating the same mistakes every election cycle. Think small, think now if you have any hope of winning big.
