Dear Maestro,

Congratulations on your selection to run the most prestigious Kennedy Center. I salute you on a well fought campaign. Your victory was most assuredly earned with honor and distinction.

I fear though I must strike a discordant note. While I know you to be a man of the people, always willing to get dirt under your nails, to be one of the guys, your choice of the J6 choir to be the house band in perpetuity leaves me rather cold.

It is not because they are wholly lacking in musical acumen. And your evident pride in all of them, as one, in refusing to sing like a canary for the prosecutor or sing for their supper despite the warden’s demand, is entirely justified. It is just that this limiting of your gaze is a wee bit unfair to all your other followers who deserve a shot. I know you don't believe that one is entitled to a leg up based on some artificial barometer. Your position on dismantling DEI practices is, dare I say it, simply astounding.

Making your determination of who warrants a place of high distinction on this most venerable stage predicated solely on whether a person has committed an act of assault, or worse, at our nation's Capitol, goes against everything you so fervently advocate.

Sir, please open up this competition to all who have committed sins in your name. I am quite certain there are thousands, no millions more who will thus fall under your most discerning eye. It is the right and just way for you to proceed.

I believe the sound of music at the Kennedy Center will be greatly enhanced if you not only talk the talk but walk the walk (not of the perp variety). Please broaden your horizon.

I thank you in advance for your most diligent effort in taking our nation's beloved arts venue to places it has never gone before. And, quite honestly, never even contemplated heading. Indeed, you will make a most unique conductor.
