(Trump's sly "I'm immune from prosecution" claim finally runs aground)
Chutzpah.
The argument made today on behalf of Mr. Trump to the Federal appellate court was surreal, ludicrous and, sadly, not unanticipated.
For the man who once boasted of being able to shoot someone in broad daylight on Fifth Avenue without adverse consequence, today's claim that he was not criminally liable for ANY actions taken or authorized by him while President, unless he was first impeached and convicted by the Senate, makes an absolute mockery of our democracy, our Constitution, our rule of law. It is an insult to our intelligence and was treated as such by those who sat in judgment.
Richard Nixon was pardoned by his successor because it was unquestioned that otherwise he was subject to prosecution for what he had done relating to Watergate. And the Senate, along with Mr. Trump's own counsel, during Mr. Trump's second impeachment proceeding, explicitly emphasized that not convicting Mr. Trump during that proceeding, did not preclude later criminal prosecution for these same actions.
Today was a waste of time, a waste of breath and little more than Mr. Trump trying to run out the clock on this prosecution, delaying it until it, in his mind, becomes irrelevant after election day.
A disgraceful performance. But what else would we expect.
Beyond chutzpah!!
