("The College Board Strips Down Its A.P. Curriculum for African American Studies")
It is the whitewashing of black America.
If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and comes on the heels of the Governor DeSantis crusade to do a Houdini on any matter that would cast his version of white America in a bad light, then it is a duck.
The NY Times reported of the "purging" by the College Board of inconvenient truths like critical race theory, the Black Lives Matter movement, the queer experience and Black feminism from the topics to be studied by advanced placement students. Why? Do these matters not exist? Are they too "controversial" because men like Ron DeSantis find them uncomfortable? Is that the standard by which we are to be governed in our educational system?
It is always a problem to play "slippery slope", making one determination a gateway to other cascading calculations. But can one not envision this decision leading to other equally reprehensible ones whereby we are left with a version of history that only suits the needs of those who would rather not have us know, not remember, the fractures and faults we exhibit. The pain we have caused, we have witnessed, as though it never even existed.
And yes, we recall books that have been burned and ideas that have been sent deep underground to be buried. Nations can and do exact cruelty upon some of those who inhabit its borders. If these impulses are not subject to analysis under a microscope, the unthinkable soon becomes the ordinary.
So this is far more than the College Board modifying the content of one course. It is their permitting the course of history, past, present and future to be changed to accommodate the worst instincts of some among us. And of one governor of Florida in particular.
As time goes on, the younger generation of black Americans will have to face more difficulty of telling their real and complete history. That is what these whitewashers want. Tom Hanks says it best with his comments:
