THE QUESTION- Has a former President ever run against a sitting President who earlier defeated him and then beaten him four years later?
THE ANSWER- Gerald Ford (1976) and Jimmy Carter (1980)
THE QUESTION- What other sitting Presidents (apart from Cleveland and Harrison) were subsequently defeated in consecutive elections (technically not re-elections for both since Mr. Ford ascended when Mr. Nixon descended)?
I know these may seem a bit like tongue twisters for the brain, but since we are now well over 500 extremely long days from election night 2023, and between here and eternity we will be bombarded with a million irrelevances, it is good that we get started off on the wrong foot early.
