24 hours ago she seemed lost. Tentative as she had never been. Today, the demons disappeared.
Mikaela Shiffrin now with 100 World Cup victories in a career unmatched in this sport and maybe unrivalled in any other.
A little more than two months ago she had been injured, seriously, mere seconds from the finish line, in sight of 100 then. Her recovery had been hard, mentally as well as physically. She has spoken of the PTSD, racing wise, she still suffers from in the giant slalom, the discipline in which she had gotten hurt. This weekend, clearly reluctant in her return to that discipline, she showed that the fear of the speed required had not nearly dissipated. Her result shockingly slow.
But today, in the technical quickness of the slalom, she was at ease and at home once more. After the win, the emotion poured out of her, as she collapsed on the snow. She had reached a seemingly unattainable mountaintop in ski racing with statistics no one had even dared dream of.
And she had demonstrated on this day not merely the skills but the heart of a champion in taking the final arduous step in an impossible, possible journey.
Amen.
a very nice tribute to a tremendously talented athlete.
